Top Tips When Uni Hunting!

Howdy Folks,
Been thinking about doing this for a while whilst we have been looking at uni's so here are some of my top tips!

1. Look at as many universities as you can!

I know that not everyone can afford or has the time to travel all over the country when looking for universities but if you know what you want to study then try to research which universities are good, then ignore that and look at them all. It sounds stupid but there might be one that you like the idea of that turns out to be awful and vise versa with any universities. This will also help you to accumulate a list of things you want out of studying at uni.

2. Learn what you want from a uni!

I have looked at 9 universities and this has really helped me to construct a list of what I am looking for out of an education at university. Admittedly I'm not into going out clubbing every night so don't really look for that when looking at a university. I also have learnt whilst looking around the universities that I am looking for a passionate teacher, I know that nobody's looking for a teacher that doesn't care but I want a teacher that can inspire me with their passion. I also know that I would like good additional learning support as that will be something that is important to me. So make sure you know what you want from university as it is your education you will be paying for!

3. Have a one on one with the course lecturer!

It can be hard to make time to go to all the various talks when you are looking around uni but make sure you make time to have a one one one chat with the course lecturer, this way you can ask them any questions that you want to and also get more of a feel for them as a teacher and the course as a whole. It sounds like a pointless task but can really make or break a university viewing if you don't like the lecturer, as you're not going to want to spend the next 3-4 years studying with them.

4. Know what talks are important to visit!

Every university will have similar talks and tours to others. I find the accommodation tour is a MUST, as it will be showing you where you could possibly be living for the next year. Things that aren't important to visit at every university you visit would be things like the UCAS application talk, personal statement talk and the finance talk. These are offered at every uni and once you have been to one, you have been to them all! An optional choice would be the campus tour, varying on the size of the university you might choose to do the campus tour. I'm not too fussed by these because I always make sure to have seen at least the media building and to me the rest is not as important because you will have some point either had to visit a building or area for a talk or an exhibit and will eventually see most of the campus.

5. Make Good vs Bad notes to look back on!

This job is normally done by my lovely mother as I am either trying to control my anxiety or just soaking things in. But always make sure to take some paper and a pen so that you can write down what you like and dislike about the universities you are visiting. This can help you when you go home and you are trying to decide which university you want to go to.

I hope some of these tips can help you a little in choosing which university you want to go to!
Lot's of Love,
Rebecca
