Okay okay, so how many of you rolled your eyes at the title of this post? Yes I understand that the word feminism doesn't have the best connotations but I want to talk to you about why I think it is important and how it's not getting the respect it deserves.
Feminism can mean lots of different things, it's not all women hating men. To me Feminism is giving equal opportunities (and pay) to both men and women regardless of their gender. We are now in a time where gender is no longer this easy line of male and female, there are lots of other options out there too that need to be respected just as much. But to not have the same opportunities because of the anatomy that, for the record I DID NOT CHOOSE TO HAVE, is not fair at all.
For centuries this debate has been doing on and I know I'm not the first to be angered by it, but I want to go into a field of work that is highly male based. If you look at BBC Radio 1 there's barely any female presenters during a weekday, I believe that the only one is actually Fearne Cotton. It just seems so daunting to try and get into this field that is so male dominated.
Emma Watson recently did an incredible speech at the UN and it was one of the most interesting and powerful speeches on feminism that I have watched. You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-iFl4qhBsE . Emma talks so eloquently that it really brings to your attention the importance of feminism.
I always used to hear that "feminism wasn't sexy" and "boys won't like it if you're a strong feminist" but really it is something that shouldn't be considered unsexy because really it's only the fight for equal rights between males and females. I used to be so worried about sharing my feminist views because I didn't want to be seen as one of those 'man hating feminists', but I realised that's not the point of feminism and what is important is to continue to talk about it so that the problem is resolved.
It might not be an easy task but I hope that my sister will be able to grow up in a society where men and women are treated equally so that she too can have the best shot of whatever career she wants to go into, regardless of her gender.
Lots of Love,
Rebecca
